Hi everyone,
I’m currently preparing a release of an instrumental brass band live recording, and I’m facing the same metadata question with two tracks on the release.
Both tracks are medleys / potpourris (e.g. a tango medley and an Austrian-themed medley), newly recorded by our band. No original audio recordings were used.
For both tracks, I could not identify a clearly matching GEMA work entry for the actual medley as recorded.
Since iMusician requires a composer field and does not offer a separate “medley” or “work type” option (only “is this a cover song”), I chose the following approach in order to avoid guessing or assigning incorrect rights holders:
– Track marked as Cover = Yes
– Composer: “Traditional” (used as a technical placeholder, as there is no single identifiable composer for the overall medley)
– Arranger credited correctly
– Publisher left empty, because no clearly assignable work publisher for the medley itself could be identified (notation publishers ≠ work publishers)
In addition, I’m currently considering whether it is recommended or expected to explicitly include “Medley” or “Potpourri” in the track title itself, in order to make the structure of the work clearer for quality control and stores.
This approach applies consistently to both medley tracks on the release.
Could you please confirm that this metadata approach (including the optional use of “Medley/Potpourri” in the track title) is acceptable for the quality check in such cases?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Kai
