Correct Artists Features

Dear support,

I have a question about 2 existing releases that I have done with you in the past. It concerns the CD ‘All That Hymns’ and ‘Be Still My Soul’. Can I add featured artists to that for e.g. Spotify? I have now featured: Jan Willem van Delft Trio, Mark Dekkers and Jeroen Vrolijk on All That Hymns, but I want to add my own name: Jan Willem van Delft.

Besides that: on the album 'Be Still My Soul’ of The Creative Collective Trio I want to feature 3 musicians (including myself).

Furthermore, I want to release a new album via the app soon, and now do it right. It concerns a duo album where the singer and I are both main artists. Can you help me further? Thank you very much in advance.

Kind regards,

Jan Willem

hi @jwaymusic , I’m forwarding your question to @Carlos from the Team :v:

Hey @jwaymusic,

Yes, you can add featured artists. To request the modifications, please follow these steps.

Please note however that you cannot credit yourself as an artist in the context of a release where your band/collective is already credited. If you are part of Jan Willem van Delft Trio & The Creative Collective Trio, you cannot add your own name on top of that because you are already credited through your collective/band.

Example: All Queen albums where Freddie Mercury performs are credited under Queen, not Queen ft. Freddie Mercury. The same applies in your case.

For your new release, you need to decide with the singer if you want to be credited as a unique duo where both your names are tied or if you want it to be a collaboration between 2 distinct artists.

Dear Carlos,

Thanks for your reply.
Last Christmas I released a Christmas album together with a fellow musician, in which we are both part of the project (The Christmas Project), as well as musicians (Henk Kraaijeveld & Jan Willem van Delft). Both the name of the project (the band name) and our names could both be mentioned, see the attachment for this. But from your answer I understand that this is not possible? If it is possible with The Christmas Project, it seems to me that it is also possible with my other own projects, I would think. Thanks in advance for your answer!

Hi Carlos,
In the meantime I am registering a new release in my portal. At the heading ‘Label’ I can only choose from an earlier label for another release (which is not suitable), or upgrade, or pay € 20 for a custom label. I also read that it is mandatory, but that it can also be free? Can you help me further, then I can complete the release. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey @jwaymusic,

→ On the Christmas Project, that was just a mistake that slipped through unfortunately. I will kindly ask you to not repeat this and to choose between your band/group name or yours from now on

At the heading ‘Label’ I can only choose from an earlier label for another release (which is not suitable), or upgrade, or pay € 20 for a custom label.

→ That’s correct. You either re-use your already free label iMD-BSMS-TCCT (it’s included with your plan) or you pay 20€ to purchase a custom label that you can name however you want. If you upgrade your plan, this option will be included in your subscription.

Hope this helps!

Dear Carlos, thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.
About the Christmas Project: Our (English) digital distributor has taken over, accepted and implemented these requests regarding name mention (project, names) from us. I am very curious as to which party indicates this as a mistake: is it iMusician or Spotify? And why is this seen as a mistake? I mainly want to learn from this, but I have not heard of this before, that it is not possible. Is that also the reason why my own name (Jan Willem van Delft) cannot be mentioned with the Jan Willem van Delft Trio? And the other members (Mark Dekkers and Jeroen Vrolijk) can? What I find difficult in this, is that I am therefore less easy to find as a person, as a musician on other productions.
And regarding the fee regarding a label name: understandable, I will take that route.

Hey @jwaymusic, that’s actually an Apple rule, but it applies to most other platforms. Essentially, whenever you are crediting an artist name, you cannot include any “additional information” other than the actual artist name

In the case of a band, that would mean crediting band members on top of already crediting the band (which is basically like crediting everybody twice, which makes no sense in terms of branding and catalogue management).

If your band Jan Willem van Delft Trio consists of Jan Willem van Delft, Mark Dekkers and Jeroen Vrolijk, then these people are musicians/band members, not artists. The artist here is the band, under which you and the other 2 musicians are represented.

I understand that you would want better visibility for your personal name. In this case I would suggest using it as your artist name whenever it’s relevant (i.e. when you’re releasing a solo project). Again, here’s an other example:

  • Revolver is an album by The Beatles, not by Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison.
  • Tug of War is an album by Paul McCartney, not by the The Beatles.

In conclusion, you must understand that your bands and solo project are 2 separate things that need to be credited differently
