I already have a Spotify profile with a different name

I have just scheduled the release of my first song via iMusician, and in the process I was asked to provide my name and the links to my Spotify and Apple profiles. I provided my new, updated artist name for this release and linked the artist profiles from Spotify and Apple. The release tool noted that these names did not match, but it didn’t raise any serious complaint about it.

So my question is: how will this release be handled by iMusician? Will a completely new profile be created on Spotify and Apple Music under my new artist name, or will my existing profile be renamed?

For renaming an artist, Spotify states that the distributor should handle this.
Thanks in advance for any help!

hi @AtoZ , as far as I understand you have changed your artist name for your latest release, the older releases won’t be affected by this, if you would want to change the artist name of your old releases you might have to take them down and release them with your new artist name which, btw, should be created by spotify, and republish them with the new name and a new ISRC code.
please take also a look at this:

Hey @AtoZ,

Why would you try to link your artist name to a profile that doesn’t match? That doesn’t make sense.

Here’s the procedure you need to refer to: I have changed my Artist Name — what should I do? | iMusician

Thanks for the quick reply and the link!

Just to clarify what I’m trying to achieve: my goal is to keep my existing Spotify/Apple profile and its followers, and have my new single appear on that same profile going forward under my updated artist name. That’s actually why I linked the existing profiles during setup — my understanding was that linking the existing profile is what tells the shops “put this release on this profile” instead of creating a brand-new one. The only reason the names don’t match is that I’m changing my artist name (adding my middle name), so the release name differs from the current profile name.

I did read the FAQ you linked. If I understand it correctly, it describes taking the existing release(s) down and re-releasing under the new name. But that seems aimed at re-releasing existing music, and I’d worry it means losing the followers and history on my current profile. My case is a little different: I’m not re-releasing old material — I’m putting out a brand-new single, and I’d like it to land on the existing profile while that profile gets renamed.

So my actual question is: can iMusician (as my distributor) submit an artist-name change/rename to Spotify and Apple for my existing profile, so it keeps its followers but shows the new name — with the new single appearing there? Or is takedown + recreate really the only route, in which case I’d lose those followers?

Thanks again for the help!

You can’t do that I’m afraid. Your artist name must match with the profile hosting its music.

If you want to change your artist name, the only possible procedure is the one described in the FAQ I linked. You will have to create a new artist profile.

Kind regards,

So in case of my release that is now queued for release on iMusician. Does it mean you will create a new Artist with my new name on Spotify and I will have to claim it afterwards from Spotify?

Or will you deliver the new song into my old Artist profile?

After all in this new release I gave you my new name but linked it to the old Artist name.

So which of the two will this release now follow?
