My album doesn't appear in Apple Music or Apple Classical – why?

My album came out on 17th of January, but it still hasn’t appeared on Apple Music or Apple Classical although the boxes were ticked. No problems with Idagio, Qobuz, Tidal etc., but not available on Apple. My previous albums are there with no problems.

Why can this be? The iMusician Need help app cannot help in this problem, because it just loops back to itself. The only advice-like thing it gave was “check the release issues”, but there are none to check. Can anybody help?

Hey @otraihala could you please share the EAN barcode of your release so I can take a closer look?

Thanks for replying. EAN is 9 362531 051489.

Thanks @otraihala. I’m afraid Apple rejected your release due to inconsistencies in your metadata.

You’ve credited the following artists as featurings on the release, but as main artists on each track they appear on:

  • Anna-Sofia Anttonen
  • Avanti! Quartet - Airo Quartet
  • Kaisa Kortelainen - Jerry Piipponen

Could you please tell me why?

Well they feature on the album, where they perform on certain tracks (but not all). What’s the difference? It wasn’t a problem for other platforms. How to correct that?

Well, they’re either featured artists or main ones. In any case, they can’t be both at the same time.

Based on what you wrote at the release level (Osmo Tapio Räihälä being the only main artist), the tracklist should look like this:

  1. Swarm (Live) - Osmo Tapio Räihälä feat. Avanti! Quartet - Airo Quartet
  2. Versum II: Postea (Live) - Osmo Tapio Räihälä
  3. Versum III: Inter (Live) - Osmo Tapio Räihälä
  4. Biodegradable Kiss (Live) - Osmo Tapio Räihälä feat. Kaisa Kortelainen - Jerry Piipponen
  5. Oil Today Water Tomorrow (Live) - Osmo Tapio Räihälä feat. Anna-Sofia Anttonen

Apple Music is stricter than other platforms.

Ok. This practice seems to come from the pop music field, but never mind that. In art music, the composer is the main artist, and performers are just performers, featuring. However, on tracks 1, 3 and partly also 5 it should then probably be the other way round: the performer is the main artist. Is there a way to change this now, to get the album to end up on Apple Music and Classical?

So, what can I do to make the album appear on Apple Music and Classical?

This is a standard that applies to all shops and genres. Primary artists are distinct from secondary ones and the roles you assign them (main, featuring, etc.) determine that.

You can request a modification and correct your metadata by attributing the right roles to each artist.
