Waterfall Release strategy: Can I also put these singles in an EP?

Hi there, I have about 6 songs I’m wanting to release over the next 2-3 months as part of a waterfall strategy. I read your article here which was very helpful. These 6 songs (less than 30 minutes) are all part of an introductory tape I’m releasing, so my question is, once I’ve released the 6 singles (let’s say by mid-December), can I then package it all as an EP so it’s listed under one release on streaming platforms? I’m aware it will still show the singles in my discography, but I’m hoping to also have it all listed under one EP release rather than only having two sets of ‘Single releases’ which have three songs each. This way I could also give my EP a title rather than it being 6 individual singles.

e.g. I release single A, single B + A, single C + B +A
then single D, single E + D, single F + E + D
then an EP containing singles A-F

Lastly, I’m hoping to release one of the singles on Beatport. I think I recall reading that you need to already have one song released on Spotify first. If I want the second single to be the one to go on Beatport, will I need to allow at least four weeks from the release date of the first single? I’m trying to plan ahead so I can get my custom label and song onto Beatport in the next couple of months.

I will be subscribing to the AMPLIFY+ plan to help facilitate this.

Thank you!

hi @jamescurtis let’s say that technically it should be possible, but I’d suggest to release single A , single B up to single E and then release EP A to F. I’m anyways tagging @Carlos here to see if he has a better idea and for the second part of your question :v:

Thanks Andi, that sounds like a good option to me which I’d be happy to do!

Hey @jamescurtis and @Andi,

Yep, that’s the best way to approach it :+1:

  1. Release your singles (first one with one track, second one with two tracks, etc.);
  2. Each time you create a new single, make sure to add the previous tracks you’ve already distributed by clicking on “Include from Library” (to keep the same metadata and ISRCs);
  3. When you create the final EP, add all the tracks by clicking on “Include from Library”.

Regarding your second question; in order to distribute to Beatport you need to register your label beforehand (if you don’t want to use our own label iM Electronica). Here are the steps to do it: How To Distribute On Electronic Music Shops? | iMusician

If I remember correctly, you are not required to have music on Spotify, but your label should have a SoundCloud profile with at least one track publicly posted on it :thinking:

Hope this helps :slight_smile:

Thanks @Carlos that all makes sense! One more thing I’m wondering is how volumes differ to this and how they’d appear on my Spotify, etc.

Would they look like EP’s essentially? I’m interested in releasing 'The Intro Tape Vol. 1", “…Vol. 2”, “…Vol. 3” and would wonder if I should do it as mentioned above, or if there’s an alternative way with volumes. I’ve love to better understand how they work! Are there benefits to one over the other? Thanks!

Hey @jamescurtis,

Volumes are meant to divide a same release into different parts, kind of like a Vinyl has an A side and a B side. This is what it would look like on Spotify:

Volumes are not “EPs”, they are just a way to divide your release :slight_smile:
